Rapid City, South Dakota

We made it to Rapid City, South Dakota on Sunday 7/29 our destination for this trip. It was a nice easy drive and we started to see more hills and mountains. We are staying at the Teepee Campground a pretty nice place for seeing all the sites we wanted to visit. Our first ride was to Mt. Rushmore where the parking is $11 but the park is free. I have always seen pictures and postcards of Mt. Rushmore and thought it would appear bigger than what you really see. I was wanting it to be WOW but it was just wow. But you must think about this monument being completed in 1941 and how they were able to carve the different figures. It really is something!! But it is still a place you must see and with the number of visitors we saw this day, people are coming to the national memorial.

After spending several hours walking around Mt. Rushmore we decided to ride over to Custer State Park. The roads thru the park are really nice for motorcycles. The Needles Highway is in the park and has some of the most beautiful scenery and takes you thru several tunnels. Another ride in the park is the Wildlife Loop Road which hopefully will allow you to see buffalo, white tail dear and free loading burros. One of us, got up close and personal with the buffalo. They own the road and you have to wait for them:) All in All a great first day in South Dakota.
